I hope this summer has provided you and your child ample time to relax and rejuvenate in preparation for the new school year, beginning on Wednesday, July 29th. This year, we continue the important work of language and literacy in all classes. Instructional strategies such as Daily Message (whereby students have a chance to practice and improve both reading and ASL signing skills on a daily basis) will become part of our school routine. As part of our focus on sustainability, the former pleasure pool will be transformed into a garden for extended learning outside of the classroom. These are simply two examples of the learning that will take place in and outside of classrooms.
This school year also brings with it the opportunity to deepen out commitment to our school No Bully vision of "Open Minds, Open Eyes, and Open Hearts." It is through respect of self and others that we build upon this foundation, wherever we are. In light of this continued vision, HSDB will utilize PATHS, a social-emotional curriculum used by Deaf schools across the nation in both elementary and secondary classrooms. PATHS curriculum touches upon themes such as respect of self, of others, and of the world we live in.
It is my desire that you become an integral part of HSDB 'Ohana. I invite you to take an active role in our school's various activities and organizations. We are always looking for parents to volunteer as members of the School Community Council; Association of Parents and Teachers; and Winter Festival. If your schedule does not allow you to participate on a deeper level, I welcome you to the parent activities (e.g., Open House, Parent/Teacher Conferences, No Bully Parent Training, etc.) offered throughout the year. This year, our annual Open House will be held on the first day of school. Please join us:
