Philosophy

All students can learn. Our democratic society grants each student the right to a free, appropriate public education. Public education’s primary responsibility is to provide educational experiences and opportunities that allow students to develop their unique abilities and skills with high expectations of success, according to their communication, intellectual, emotional, psychological, social, cultural and physical needs as individuals.

At HSDB, we respect and value the communication needs and diversity of the individuals in our unique community. We offer a bilingual-bicultural educational experience and individualized supports and services to prepare students with 21st century college and career readiness skills.

Students graduating from HSDB leave with a broad base of academic knowledge and life skill knowledge including the skills needed for students and workers in the 21st century such as analytical reading and writing, clear communication, critical thinking, creativity, flexibility, goal setting and initiative, social skills, productivity, and leadership. These skills are embedded in the Hawaii Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics.
